A FOLLOW-UP TO MY QUERY--
What we would ideally like to do, i understand that we can use a phone to create a mobile hot spot to access the internet as we drive-- Rent or buy? Thanks in advance! What about renting a phone when we land-- or even buying one?

Hank, Using a Cellphone as a "mobile Hot Spot" may not be the cheapest option. I'll have to leave that question for one of the others, as that's something I've never done and will never do. An easier option would probably be to use a USB Internet Drive similar to This type. Renting a phone is not a really good idea, as that tends to be EXPENSIVE! You could certainly buy a cheap PAYG Phone when you arrive. Unless there's an important reason to have internet access while you're out touring, it's cheaper and easier just to use Wi-Fi access. If you already own a newer GSM-capable smartphone, and you're already paying for a data plan, you've probably already got your mobile hotspot. Newer Android phones and the IPhone4 already have this capability built-in.

That's true, but BE SURE to look into the cost of using that data plan in Europe. Your trip won't end on a pleasant note if you return home to find a multi-thousand dollar bill for data roaming waiting in the mailbox!
