We need to take the train from Salzburg to Munich in a few days, but aren't ready to commit to a certain time yet. Can we buy tickets at the train station and are they more expensive than buying in advance? Thanks.
You only save 5.60 buying in advance for the Regional Express, so its up to you.
If you don't mind taking an extra half hour on a Regional Express (vs an EC or RailJet), you can make the trip from Salzburg to Munich with a Bayern-Ticket, which you can buy from a German Rail (Bahn) automat in the Salzburg Hbf. The Bayern-Ticket costs 22€ for the first person, 4€ more for each additional person up to 5, total (38€). The Bayern-Ticket includes unlimited use of the conveyances of the MVV (Munich metro) for the entire day when you get to Munich. Added: You should be able to get the Bayern-Ticket from a German Rail automat at the Salzburg Hbf for the same price that day. I think I also saw it for sale on the Austrian Rail automats.
I was thinking the same thing as Lee. Salzburg is considered the last stop for the Bayern pass so you don't need a supplement. Depending on how many are traveling with you, the pass can be a big savings - plus gives you the chance hop-on, hop-off at sights along the way if you like. You don't need to reserve ahead to use the pass but do have to take the regional trains, which are a little slower (but also best for stops along the way) than the inter-city trains.
