Busing in Portugal

Prior to entry into the Eurozone, Portugal had numerous independently owned bus lines - some had only one small bus and one driver. Can one still find these small independent buses?

I was there last month and used the Metro, city buses and tram to get around Lisboa. I also traveled by long distance coaches from Sevilla to Lagos and Lagos to Lisboa operated by Damas and Eva. If these independent buses exist, I did not see them while waiting for the city bus & tram in the busy squares.

Thanks Jennifer!
I found them mostly in northern Portugal - Porto and near the Spanish border. They were so wonderful with personalized service on occasion. I was able to get off one bus, visit a town for a few hours, and get on the next one to continue my journey. The second bus driver knew my name and looked for me when he arrived!
