We have had to stay in Banyuls sur Mer on coast of france tonight as roads are blocked due to the bush fires in northern Spain - can you give us an update on road status as we need to get to Barcelona via road ASAP - thanks Leonie
We are not Rick Steves staff, we are just volunteers answering travel questions. For questions such as yours, you should consult local authorities or websites for road information.
Leonie, It's likely that length of the closures are somewhat "uncertain" at this point, and will depend on the progress of the fires. Authorities will be evaluating the situation on a regular basis, and will re-open roads when they feel they're safe. My suggestion would be to check with the staff at your Hotel, as they'll know which local authorities to contact for the most current information. In the same situation, I might consider heading west and then approaching Barcelona from that direction. Check your road map to see what options you have. A new route will take longer, but so will sitting in one place for several days. Good luck!
I was also going to advise going further west and heading to Barcelona via a longer route. The bush fires have made news here in France because several French persons have died as a result. Be safe.
This is probably too late, but we were on the A7 and A8 autoroute yesterday and had the 107.7 autoroute station on. The A9 was still a mess and people were advised to pass through Andorra to get to Spain. The road opened for a little while and reclosed yesterday. Hope you've made it by now.
