Bus vs. train from Madrid to Segova.

My wife and I are planning a day trip to Segovia in mid Oct. Expiriencing some minor confusion re. which bus line and bus station -- sorry guys, going to use english for this posting -- to use.

We think the only train to Segovia leaves from Chamartin. This is a "fur piece" from our hotel. Additionally the train station in Segovia is a good 20+ min. walk to the center of town. Note: Not worried about the walk in, it's the mad dash to the last train in the shank of the evening that leaves us cold. So far, we've searched for bus lines servicing Segivia leaving from Estacion De Sur, but have not found any.

Ok, now the questions:

1) Are there any trains bound for Segovia leaving from Atochia?

2) The name of the bus line(s) and web site if possible of bus line(s) servicing Segovia and the name of the estacion de autobus in Madrid.

Thanks in advance for all of your help, suggestions and keen insights.

Best Regards,

Tom Scatchard

Not sure about bus service.

The train is very fast with decent frequency. Leaves from Chamartin only. It may be far from your hotel but the Madrid metro is very good. I guess you could compare how far the bus station is. If you are close to Atocha, there are direct links between the two stations.

Once in Segovia, there is a local bus timed with the train schedule. TAKE the local bus. It'd be FAR more than a 20 minute walk as its a 15 minute bus ride through suburban sprawl. Cost is minimal.

We took the bus last November for a daytrip to Segovia, so I can help with the bus logistics. We walked to metro/rail/bus station, Estación Príncipe Pío, from Puerta del Sol area (far but 20-25 minutes for us)…the station also houses a shopping mall. Head toward bus terminal once in the station, go to lowest level, and purchase a roundtrip ticket at the ticket window (brush up on your Spanish…ticket seller may not speak much/any English). Turn around and head toward glass doors to where buses are parked (underground but right outside doors)…need to show ticket taker your receipt/ticket before going through doors. Find correct bus and get on. Note that there are seat assignments on the receipt/ticket...you can move around later if the bus isn’t full. Hang onto your receipt/ticket…you’ll need to exchange it for another receipt/ticket at the station ticket window in Segovia for your return trip (no need to pay since you already purchased a roundtrip, but you will need a new receipt/ticket to board for home. The bus line is Sepulveda...buses are like tour buses here...not like Greyhound (but no bathroom). Trip takes a little more than an hour. The scenery on the way up is quite nice…arid, brushy, hilly, even small mountains…reminded me of Wyoming. Get off at second stop (main terminal) in Segovia. Town center and aqueduct is a ten minute walk from there. Happy travels.
