I will be in Madrid for five nights starting later this week. I would like to visit, Toledo, El Escorial/Valley of the Fallen and maybe Segovia. Is the bus system reliable for the routes between Madrid and these locations, or would I be better off taking the train?
Hi Robert,
We took a bus from Madrid to Salamanca last March and it worked very well. The bus was clean, comfortable, and very affordable. We followed Rick's directions in his Spain book under the Transportation Connections "By Bus" section located in the Madrid chapter. According to his book the bus to Toledo leaves from the South Bus Station and the bus to Segovia leaves from the Sepulvedana Station. He provides specific directions on how to reach each station. Have a great trip!

For Toledo, I'd highly recommend the high speed train from Madrid as opposed to bus. It only takes 35 minutes. :)
I took the bus from Madris to Segovia and it was a perfect day trip.
Maribels Guides is a great tool, and she gives helpful hints on where to get the bus, etc.

If you go to Segovia, be sure to try the suckling pig! YUM
I can only speak for the bus service between Madrid and Toledo, but it was fast, cheap and the bus was clean (much more comfortable than Greyhound). It does take a bit longer than the train (45min-1 hour) but was also substantially less expensive.
Good Luck!
