I'll be taking a bus from the Estacio del Nord (Barcelona) to Girona, where I'll pick up a rental car. So two questions: (1) does the Barcelona bus go into Girona central, or to the airport south of Girona (I'd prefer central location), and (2) are there car rental agencies in Girona central, or are they only at the airport south of the city?

Looks like you can choose a bus to the airport, or a bus to Girona central. Here's the bus system website: http://www.sagales.com/index.php?secc=linies&tipus=interurbanes Autoeurope.com shows one car rental pickup location in Girona - at the train station.

Thanks. It looks like the bus station is next to the trail station, and both are on the "new town" side of the river, while the tourist info place in in the "old town." A short walk, I assume.

Girona is quite small (and beautiful). The train station is right beside the bus station.
Whether there are car rental agencies there or not, I didn't notice. Enjoy your trip, it's a lovely place.

Now I have a new question: does the same bus (from Nord station, Barcelona) that gets into Girona central also stop at the airport? Reason I ask: better car rental options at the airport.

I don't want to say for sure Bob, but I think the airport bus from Girona is a separate route.

It's two separate bus routes from Barcelona. There's another bus that runs between the airport and central Girona. Looks like it runs every 30 minutes. You'll see it on the website I sent you in my previous answer.
