Greetings, we are planning a month-long trip next summer. My daughter will be spending 3 weeks with friends in the Burgundy region so mom and dad are going over as well. We are debating how long we should stay in the area - 2 weeks? 3 weeks too much? We have spent time in other parts of France but not here so just not sure... Thanks in advance, Steve and Kim
Could you be more specific as to where in Burgundy. It's spread from Sens in the north to the beaujolais region in the south.
The Dijon area.... We are looking at daytrips as well so not sure where a good home base would be for our first time in the area....Thx
Dijon is actually a pretty good base. Direct trains to Paris 1 hr 40 min, Lyon 1 hr 40 min, Lausanne 2 hr, Beaune 20 min, and single connections to Colmar, Strasbourg, Nancy. In Dijon there is the Ducal Palace, wine tours of the Cote D'Or.
My sister-in-law is from Burgundy so I have been there several times. It is a beautiful area. We enjoyed riding bikes on the voie verte near Cormatin and visiting the chateau at Cormatin. I wouldn't do one of the biking tours though - we saw many people doing it but I didn't see anyone having fun. Just rent bikes for a day or half day in St. Gengoux de National. There are many small villages you can visit if you like exploring. There is a great ropes course in Givry. Don't know how old your daughter is or what she likes but my kids loved it - ages 8-16. Fun for young adults too. The scenery around Germagny and Savianges is gorgeous but there is nothing to the towns. RS has suggestions for Dijon and Beaune. I wouldn't spend more than a week there. The great thing is that in Dijon the TGV is at your service. Decide where else you want to go and go! We thought Lyon was a nice place to visit for a day or 2. Have fun.
We've been going to Burgundy for the last forty years, as my in-laws lived there. During that time, we have always had a Michelin Green Guide either with us or in the house. Each edition just keeps getting thicker and thicker. I highly recommend it as you'll find it outlines so much to see and do in Burgundy. It is published in English, as well as French. Two weeks would give you a good taste of the region.
Thx for he replies..Just to get an idea about distances, how long a drive is Vezelay from Dijon? Hard to tell on the map..Steve
An hour and a little bit. It's less than a hundred miles, all freeway excep for the first five or ten miles, and you'll be sitting on eighty the whole way. I think there's only one toll stop and it's a cheapie - - under ten bucks.
That would be nice for a change. We drove the Arles to Nice route last summer- it was a bit brutal w/traffic and the constant toll booths.. Sounds like we should be able to fill two weeks in Burgundy. Thx
Vezelay is great, the very last part is a little road with parking available before you go up to the basilica. There are prayer service (singing the liturgy of the hours) at different times during the day.
Sounds really nice actually..thanks
