I'm traveling with my sister and parents to France in late September. After spending 7 days in Paris we have 3 more nights and want a taste of the countryside. My parents are 70 so we want something relaxing that won't have us schlepping everywhere. Interested in either a B&B or barge trip through Burgundy. Do we train or rent a car from Paris? Look forward to experienced travelers' perspectives. Merci!
If you decide, which I recommend, to stay in Beaune-consider Les Jardins de Lois; our favorite in our month in France last summer. With the aforementioned rental car, you can easily get to the wine roads/small villages around Beaune. Also you can stroll to downtown in 5-10 minutes or so (we're early 60's). Have fun.
Will you return to Paris to fly home? If so, do you have 3 more nights after Paris and then back to Paris to fly home after those three nights? I feel that to fully explore and see Burgundy, you need a car. You could take the train to Beaune and rent a car there to roam around the area. There is a train from Paris to Beaune with no transfers. You could then drive back to the Paris airport and turn the car in there. If you take the train back to CDG, the trains make several transfers which could be difficult to do. Just a thought.
The other trains to Beaune transfer in Dijon to the local. It's a small train station and changing trains is not a big deal. The train will be quicker than driving and you can rent there. You are not going to see much from a barge, and besides I don't think you can find anything for just 3 days.
