Anyone ever toured this castle? I saw it for the first time today while driving by Neustadt. With the mountain backdrop, it couldn't have looked more stunning from the road, but I'm wondering if it's worth going back to tour. Likewise, Burg Trifels near Anweiler looked pretty cool (or at least, what I could see of it through the rain). Anyone out there have an opinion on this one?
Tom, I can't help you with Burg Hambach, but I've been to Trifels a number times and enjoyed it. If memory serves, it was the seat of the Holy Roman Empire for a very short period under Barbarossa and Richard the Lion Heart was held for ransom there. The castle was one of a series that provided frontier defense. A couple of others, now in ruins, can be seen from Trifels. The views from the keep are amazing. It was fully restored as a work project in the 1930s (a couple of roof tiles still display the swastika). I don't think it's a destination on its own, but if you can hook it to some other sights in the area, a visit is worthwhile.
