Have heard that Burg Eltz is being renovated. I've sent them 2 emails (a month apart) to ck that sure they're open, inquire re tours in English, ease of parking nearby (1 lady has slight mobility problems), days open & hours etc. No reply to either email. Don't want to waste half a day going there if we won't be able to tour. Anybody been there in last few wks? If so, I'd appreciate input. Thanks! Lucie
We went there a couple of weeks ago. There is renovation being done and you will see scaffolding on the outside of the castle, but when we went it wasn't affecting the inside. Parking is easy in a parking area above the castle. Then, take the shuttle van down to the castle (and more importantly back up to your car). It costs 1.50Euro/person and runs back and forth frequently. When you buy your tickets (inside the gift shop) tell them you would like to go on an English tour. During busy times, they run the English tours more frequently, but you may need to knock on the red door in the courtyard (where you wait for the tours) to inquire as to the start of the next English tour. I have been several different times and have always been able to get an English tour.
A word of warning, allow plenty of time for the person with mobility problems. There are uneven steps getting up to the start of the tour. And, inside the castle there are steps. The tour guides are generally very patient and helpful.
Amy - thanks so much! Lucie
Amy in Wiesbaden - am writing to thank you for answering my questions of 5/25 & encouraging us to go to Burg Eltz. Your info on touring the castle was exactly correct. (Don't know how to contact you but hope you occasionally read the helpline.) Burg E. was one of the highlights of a fabulous trip to Germany. And if you or your family are in the military I'd like to thank you for serving our country as well.
