recommendations?
also--is there any way to make a reservation for one of these hotels through a toll-free reservation service? i've tried websites like travelocity and orbitz, but they don't list the hotels I like that are listed in rick's book. i don't want to e-mail my credit card information and i would prefer not to have to make an overseas phone call to give my c.c. info. suggestions? THANKS.
Hotel Royal Phare is around the corner from Rue Cler and is very much a no-frills budget hotel with an online booking facility. It's a very nice, clean no-frills hotel. Most hotels have their own website, and you don't have to rely on travelocity and orbitz.
Telephoning and email are just as easy.
As others have suggested, use the E-mail and web site addresses listed in Rick's books. I found the website for the Hotel Levecque very easy to use, especially as it listed which days they had vacancies. The whole booking process (including credit card information) seemed very "user friendly".
Bonne Chance!
I've always used the websites and e-mail addresses as listed in the RS books. For a single room (share bath) in the rue Cler area, Hotel Leveque has had the lowest rates for the past few years. For a double some of the others may cost less.
If you are going now you will have a very hard time finding a room since these hotels are very reasonable and fill up 6-12 months ahead of time. We like the Hotel Champ du Mars. It is not air-conditioned as of yet but is very nice. 90 euros for a double. They have a website and we generally email them. We send our credit card info in a fax to them. They will not email you back if they are full.
You can easily book a room using the hotels own website, I have done this many times, the websites I have used have always been "secure" sites so I have never had a problem, better then email anyways.
Don't limit yourself to one street of hotels in Paris for goodness sake!!!! Check out tripadvisor.com and read the hotel reviews, why book based on one recommendation( Ricks) when you can book based on dozens of reader reviews!! I have booked hotels in both Europe and STates by reading the reviews and have always been happy.
As noted " Ricks" hotels are always full , and frankly Rick himself would urge you to find your won " back door" .
Don't use websites like travelcity etc, when you can easily use hotels own websites. Do some research. There are so many excelland budget choices in Paris , name your price and ask for ideas.
Staying in the 4th , 5ht, or 6th are better areas anyways then the 7th as far as many of us are concerned, you do not have to be a " nervous nelly" and only do what Rick says.. aaggghhh...
Rick's hotels fill up fast. I emailed the Hotel Leveque 7 1/2 months in advance for 9 days in September and they were already full. found the Grand Hotel Balcons in the Left Bank for only 10 Euros more. and from the reviews it sounds just as nice and is also in Rick's books. Rue Cler sounds nice, but there are other areas of Paris and with the metro it's only a hop skip and a jump away
enjoy!
D., on the topic of your CC concerns, I've always emailed to get availability and rates, then in the email confirming that we'd like to reserve, I tell them I will be faxing the credit card information to guarantee. It's worked quite well for us.
And I agree with some of the others posting -- you don't have to be locked into staying in Rue Cler. We actually preferred the "non-touristy" neighborhoods. Just an encouragement, in case the more economical hotels are booked.
I just booked a room for November at the Hotel Leveque. As stated above, their website is user friendly and secure.
Another option, if you have to send your credit card thru email, is to do it in two steps. Send the first half of the digits in one email and let them know that the second half will be included in the next. The chances of two separate emails being intercepted are very low.
THANKS to all who took the time to share their observations and advice, :-)
Hi. Try the web site venere.com for hotels with photos, maps and REVIEWS by people who have stayed there. Judy
We liked staying at the "Ibis" chain hotels. A double during Bastille day in July was only 70 euros a night and included the breakfast buffet. The big plus was having air conditioning and the hotel we were at was only a 5 min. walk from Gar d'Nord train station. The reception desk was super helpful and there were little restaurants all around the area along with bakeries and stores too. The rooms were perfectly clean and satisfactory.
