Budget Hotel Rue Cler, Paris

Hello,

I have contacted several hotels in the Rue Cler district as recommended by Rick Steves. I was hoping to stay at Hotel du Champ de Mars but it is already booked for May/June when I am traveling. Does anybody have a recommendation for a comfortable budget hotel similar in Rue Cler? I am looking in the 70-90 Euro range. Thanks for any recommendations!!

Holly,

I'd also recommend the Grand Hotel Leveque as it's in a great location and the staff are wonderful. If they're fully booked, check the Paris or France Guidebooks for other listings in that area, and in the price range you're considering.

If you're committed to staying in the Rue Cler area, you may have to pay slightly more. Although somewhat more expensive, you might also have a look at the Hotel Duquesne Eiffel.

Good luck!

As many fellow seasoned traverlers to Paris have figured out by now: Paris is not rue Cler. This once idealic little slice of days-gone-by has been transformed into Epcot Disney. There are several "market-styled" neighborhoods in Paris that are far superior in quality and value (St. Martin, St. Sulpic, Marias,...). I knew for myself that the party was over about six years ago while dining at Cafe du Marche and all I heard were loud, obnoxios American voices. My recommendation, if you'll be there for more than a few days (five days in Paris should be a minimum), I would consider renting. More room, better value, and a feeling of independence. Start with VRBO.com and go from there. You'll have fun looking. That's how we ended up eventually getting our own apartment. If you insist on a rue Cler hotel with the budget you've disclosed, then try the Turenne on ave. de Tourville. Friendly folks and just one block from Ecole Militaire metro. Have fun and please say "hi" to Napoleon for me...

Ed is right --- there is more to Paris than Rue Cler. I stayed in a hotel there (Hotel du Cadron, across the street from Hotel Champ de Mars, on my first trip. The hotel was nice and the neighborhood was nice, but in my opinion it is just too far from most of the places people typically go. And yes - it is overrun with Rickniks. I'm sure that when he "discovered" Rue Cler it was very different than what it has become.

Last winter we went back to Paris and rented an apartment in the Latin Quarter (5th arr.). We loved the area and the ease of getting to many sites. We also enjoyed having more space, a kitchen (saved a lot on food) and a washer/dryer.

Good luck finding a place and I hope you enjoy your time in Paris. It's my favorite city!

Have not personally stayed there but I remember a discussion about Hotel Nevers having rooms in your price range. It was a former convent in a decent location but has no elevator.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm going to look into Apartments in Le Marais and see what I find!

Hi Holly,

My wife and I stayed at the hotel "La Motte Piquet" last fall for one week and loved everything about the hotel, the location and the hotel staff. It is located in the Rue Cler district close to everything you want to see and do in Paris. It is located two minutes from the Metro, ten minute walk to the Effiel Tower and five minute walk to the Invaileds. Walking distance to many museums and great shopping in the aera. Check out their website, you'll be impressed. We have been fortune enough to visit Paris many times and this hotel is on top our list.

Hotel Diana,, I have not stayed there, but I have walked by it,, and its in a very conveinent area,, on a quieter street, but very close to the busy Latin Quarter area.

Also, Hotel Eugenie,, may be out of your price range , but I have seen three of the rooms and they were fine,,clean, reasonable size, good bathrooms and a/c etc. Location is as central as anything in Paris,, you will be right by river( 1/2 block up) on a tiny narrow and busy street, with tons of cafes and shops all around you.

Hotel Du College Du France is well thought of,, i haven't stayed there.

I would definately look outside of the Rue Cler area,, sinces its only one street,, and not that central anyways.. yes, its close to ET,, but how many times can you go there??
