Budget accomodation Paris

My husband and I need advice, it's our first visit to Paris in May 2010, 3-4 nights. We've looked at many booking sites and researched thousands of hotels. We are wanting a quiet area at night (mature couple), MUST have shower and WC in room and we hate cigarette smells. Want to experience quaint paris hotel, old decor is fine. Big challenge: max price per double room per night, 70 Euros. Have found Hotel Stella 6e, H de Rouen 2e, Port Royal H 5e, H Tiqueronne 1e or 2e, H Media and Coypel in Nat Library area. Any ideas on these or better ideas? I get the idea that the left bank is where we'd prefer to be.

For info: Etap listed as P.Montmartre on Rue Babinsky is 1.6 euro and 14 min metro ride (time includes a couple of minutes for a line change). Trip begins at Pt St Ouen metro and ends at Cite metro. Five min walk (comfortable area day or night) from hotel to metro. Current rate is 44 euro per night.

I've stayed at Hotel du Commerce (5th) a few times. It is a mix of old (hallways) and updated (rooms and breakfast area). Rates are reasonable and the location is great, very near the Maubert-Mutualite outdoor market and Metro entrance.

70 euros is difficult for Paris espec w/ shower in room, clean, quiet etc.
best re evaluate your budget(save elsewhere) or look into chain hotel with a long metro ride involved that costs time and euros. ie ibis or etap hotels.

We have stayed at Etap at Rue Dr. Babinski. Insuite bath and toilet. We paid 62Euro per night in June. Booked now, sounds like a better deal. Area 4 blocks away has many restaurants etc. One of our favorites is close too. La Pergola is a really good brasserie. Email me for better directions if needed.

We stayed at the Port Royal for six nights in June this year. It is very good value for money, and the location is excellent. We didn't take breakfast there,though...preferred to eat out. It is also an attractive hotel and very clean. The only inconvenience is that the owner does not accept credit cards.

Stayed at the Hotel Diana on Rue St. Jacques (near Sorbonne) in September @ 75 Euros for a single. They have an elevator, ensuites, it's quaint, clean, and within easy walking distance of Notre Dame/The Seine. Many, many decent choices for eating nearby, would skip the hotel breakfast, and in your price range can't imagine doing better.

The lady who owns the place is a bit stand-offish (not unusual I've found in small Paris hotels), but efficient and professional. She won't take bookings more than 3? months in advance.

We stayed at the Hotel Royal-Phare in the Rue Cler neighborhood. The rooms are cleaned everyday and are equipped with a tv, a mini refrigerator, and a shower. The hotel is located directly across from the Ecole-Militare metro stop and is a five minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. Our room had a view of the Eiffel Tower, it was so much fun to watch it light up at night! Great restaurants and location--highly recommend!

Hi,
My husband and I were in Paris for 4 nights in Sept and we stayed at a fabulous Studio Apartment (Near Republique) through Home Away and VRBO. It turned out to be 80 euro's a night - and was the best experience - super clean and cheery and very quiet. I'm sure you will be able to find something.

Hi Terry,

I stayed at the Port Royal hotel with my mother in 2003 and thought it was a perfect hotel for our needs. The rooms are small (but I believe most Paris hotels are) but sufficient.

All we did was sleep there and then head out for the day. Come back in the afternoon for a nap then a refresh before we went out to dinner.

The location was good as the Paris trains could get us anywhere we wanted to go. It was quiet (we had a room that faced the inner courtyard) and clean.

As someone mentioned the only issue I had is that we couldn't book online and had to call and make a reservation and then send a money order for the deposit etc. But that is what probably saves them charging more. We didn't pay for the breakfast as there was a great little cafe just down the street where we had our croissants and coffee each morning.

Good luck and have fun!
