Budapest or alpine Germany?

Our family of 5 are heading to Europe for a winter experience. I expect we wont be back in winter but are sure to be back when the weather is warm at some stage. We are going to Prague, Berlin, Krakow and Moscow. We have a further 5 days and I am trying to decide between Budapest and Fussen (for romantic German town/Ludwigs Palaces/European ski experience. The travel connections for both can be sorted - the question is around, given a winter experience which would be better - and is Budapest going to be better to visit in summer. Any opinions would be great. Cheers

Well, if you want to ski, of course the Alps would be the better choice! I wouldn't stay in Füssen, though. There's a minor ski area in the immediate neighborhood, but two world-class resorts, Garmisch-Partekirchen and Oberstdorf, are located about an hour to the east and west, respectively. You can reach the castles easily enough from these two towns.

Like Tom said, it really comes down to the skiing. Budapest being a major city will have more indoor things to do, although compared to other European capitals, a lot of the pleasure is in strolling around and a little less on world-class museums. That said, Budapest does have a few, and the world-famous mineral spa there is also supposed to be a real treat in winter. Budapest is not near any mountain ranges and is likely to feel fairly bleak and grey, but you're not guaranteed snow to give everything a pretty sheen. I really like Budapest, but I don't know if I'd want to go in winter. Plus your trip is already rather big capital heavy, so going to a scenic outdoorsy area might be a nice change.
