Brussels Waffles

My husband and I are planning on spending a morning in Brussels on our way to Amsterdam. I feel like I've read that waffles tend to be served as a dessert/late afternoon snack as opposed to breakfast - but my husband and I would really like to eat some for breakfast. Are there any stands open in the morning? Also, when do the fries stands start serving? We'd like to grab some of those on our way out...Thanks!

Rachel, do look over the stand before you buy. You want to find a place that takes longer but makes the waffles fresh, to order, on the heated waffle iron. Tiny stands, for example, in train stations, may have a pile of recently made waffles that they re-heat when you order. That won't be as good as fresh-made. If you have time, also try to evaluate the quality of the toppings, if you want fruit or whipped cream. Good luck.

As mentioned, waffles are street food. So are the frites which should be sampled. We think the frites are better than the waffles.

Try the fries with mayonnaise, I know, sounds weird but really good.

Frites stands are also all over Amsterdam, if you miss your chance in Brussels. But I don't remember waffles being sold on the street in Amsterdam (to be fair, I wasn't looking), so if you have to choose due to lack of time and/or stomach capacity, have the waffle in Brussels and save the fries for Amsterdam. And yes, even though it seems weird to Americans, do try mayonnaise on the fries. I love it (particularly the flavored ones, although these often cost an extra 50 cents or so).
