For our 25th Anniversary, my wife and I have 14 nights to work with. We arrive in Brussels, and the heart of our trip is Mosel where we will be staying near Cochem. How many days should we spend in the Mosel Valley? What other places (with hotels if possible) would you recommend for the other days? We have received advice to go as far West as Regensberg and East at Brugges. We have a rented car. And we are flexible. So we are wide open for suggestions for our itinerary.
We don't know enough about you - previous Europe travel, interests, romance or history, museums or hiking, travel month, etc. I personally wouldn't spend more than 7 days max in the Mosel, but if you were wine nuts, for example, that would barely be enough. But they make wine all over Germany. I would take the train to Cologne (because it's so easy from Brussels) and see some of the Rhine first. Maybe pick the car up in Cologne, Koblenz, or farther south. We were happy with the Cologne Hilton, but I suggest you look at the hotel group that includes Weinromantik Hotel Richtershof, Hauptstrasse 81-83, D-54486, Mulheim(Mosel) where we stayed for: Trier, Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach, and Burg Eltz. These luxury hotels require far advance reservation in high season. I love Gent and to a lesser extent, Bruges. But I'm opposed to driving away from the Mosel. There's plenty of romance in Belgium and Germany.
Driven around France, England, Scotland, Ireland. Enjoy driving and finding surprises (e.g., Le Monte St. Michel) we didn't plan to find. Enjoy finding good food, like to avoid areas too touristy, and don't mind getting lost, just not too lost.
