Brugge to Provence by car - 2-3days: where to stop?

Keep in mind we'll have a 4 year old with us (3 adults). and while my husband and I would LOVE to do the wine tour bit, my mom doesn't drink (nor does my 4 year old!) so really we are looking for interesting historic things to see, natural beauty + kid friendly. Our entire trip is 3 weeks, and so far our itinerary looks like this:

May 14-15 : NYC (we are from Seattle)
May 16-22 : Paris (we'll pick up a car on our way out of town)
May 23-26 : Brugge + ??
May 27-June 2 : Provence
June 3 -Drive back to Paris
June 4- Fly home

Any suggestions for how to spend that 4 days (Brugge +??) would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

Have you thought about going south first? That way, as it warms up the Belgian bit will be a bit warmer at the end.

You don't say where in Provence, but let's guess Avignon? If so, Porte d'Italie on the south side of the Perepherique in Paris to Avignon is about 423 miles or 6 hours straight through drive. Don't know how many rest stops or overnights your party would need but if you needed an overnight you could do Baune or go on a factory kitchen tour of a Nougat maker in Montelimar.

Avignon to Bruges or Brugge is over 600 miles and over 9 hours of driving. A stop in Dijon, Baune, or Reims? Or have you considered detouring slightly through Luxembourg, which will get you cheap fuel, fewer tolls and something completely different?

Thanks Nigel!

The Paris dates, and the Provence dates are already set... do you think we'll be freezing in Bruges at the end of May?

We have been thinking of Bruges (2 nights), Luxembourg (1 night), Geneva (1 night), then on to Provence...
but could skip Geneva for a different town if you suggest another one between Luxemborg and Avignon that we shouldn't miss.

Dijon looks to be about half way, but on the heels of all the big cities, I think it might be fun to hit one of the smaller towns near Dijon...any recommendations? Or is Dijon "not to be missed"?

Thanks again

Milissa, is there a particular reason for renting a car? So far, you're talking about places easily reached by train. I'm no slave to train travel, but it's possibly less expensive...and no child-restraint seat for hours for your four-year-old! And you could greatly benefit from advance-purchase tickets.
