We will be driving from Bruges to Mont St. Michel but want to break the trip up approximately half way. Any suggestions on an interesting overnight stop (not a city) and points of interest along the way. Also, we have reserved 2 nights staying on the Mont - is that excessive for what there is to see and do? Thank you.
I think Honfleur would make a great stop on a trip like this.
Two nights on MSM sounds like a lot, but would give you plenty of time there away from the crowded hours. And you might spend those crowded hours off the Mont exploring and have a serendipitously good time.
Try to get up early enough on MSM to see the tides come in.
Mont St Michel is an awesome place, but it is very compact, and easily seen in 1 day/night. The best advice is to arrive mid afternoon, spend the night and leave by 10 before the tour busses arrive.
I've stayed on the island for two nights, but I used my full day to explore other areas of Normandy, thus avoiding the daily crush of daytrippers. So to sort of answer one of your questions, two nights staying ONLY on Mont St. Michel would be far more time than anyone would need for the Mont itself, but there's enough to see within 2 hours drive that you could use it as a base. And as the others have mentioned, the place really is amazing at night.
I was at MSM for about 2 hours. Any longer and I would have been bored out of my tree! However, both Britany and Normandie have a whole world to offer. Oh, be sure to buy a bottle of Normandie Cidre at one of the Mere Poulard shops!
Thanks for the suggestions. We'll break our trip at Honfleur and stay one night on the Mont.
