We are considering spending 2 days and nights in Bruges between Christmas and New Years-any insight on what to expect? We are wanting to just relax and enjoy some good beer and chocolate before heading to Paris for a week. Thanks in advance.
I was there a few years ago, arriving on 12/27/08 and leaving on 12/29/08. There was a Christmas Market going on, and that was fun. There was plenty of beer and chocolate. It was VERY cold the year we were there.
"any insight on what to expect?" Can you elaborate?
Tom-Just wanted to know if there would be anything different going on-like the Christmas Market or is it just sleepy.
Brugge has a rather large holiday market, but I don't know if it extends after Christmas. I've never been to Brugge specifically between Christmas and New Year's (although I have in mid-December), so take this next statement with a grain of salt. In general, many cities that are popular tourist attractions see an uptick in visitors during the holiday season. The streets probably won't be mobbed, like some areas can be during the summer, but I doubt it will be dead either.
Much like Tom, we have been there in December before Christmas and the town was pretty busy, stalls at the market busy (not the best Christmas Market I've ever seen, BTW - I preferred Luxembourg) and the skating rink was not too busy but the ice was soft. Never been there after Christmas...
During my time there after Christmas it was quite crowded, most likely because of the Christmas Market. It was going on both days I was there. I have no idea how crowded it would be without the market.
