We have 8 days (9 nights) in the France leg of our trip. We're flying into Nantes, and planning to stay in Le Mont Saint Michel for 2 nights, followed by Bayeux for 2 nights, before heading to Paris. (We've visited Paris multiple times, so not concerned about short-changing it this trip). Our visit will be in late August. Is it going to be insanely crowded in places like Dinan, St. Malo, Bayeux and the D-Day beaches? I know our timing coincides with vacation season for Europeans, so I know it will be busier than during an off-peak or shoulder season, but I guess I'm wondering whether our desired itinerary is during such a hectic time that it's actually ill-advised, like a trip to the mall the day after Thanksgiving. Thanks for any insights!
Can't speak to all the places you listed but we've been to Bayeux and the D-Day beaches many times in July and August and it has never been crowded. Mont St. Michel will be crowded during the day, but not in the morning or evening.
Exactly what Susan said, but I'm not betting on rooms being available at MSM (and I'm not sure why anybody would want to sleep there one night, let alone two). If you can't get a reservation, just shift to St Malo. Dinan and St Malo never seem to get crowded except for the surge that comes over on the ferry to St Malo then poofs to somewhere. I'm not much of a europe-in-the-summer person, but the crowds seemed to have thinned down in the last few years in the other three seasons - - the economy I guess.
I've been in St Malo at a few different times during Spring/Summer and it didnt seem busy or crowded
