After looking for accomodations for myself and my adult son and daughter I am coming up short on economical choices. I am considering staying in the town across the water - Iselwald- can anyone tell me if that is easy to reach.. will the train take us there or do we have to go across by boat from Brienz?
go to www.sbb.ch/en and put in the two towns and see the transportation options.
The train does not go to Iseltwald. It is bus or boat (from Brienz). The boat could be very pleasant. It is also a nice walk frm there to Giessbach, with the fairycastle hotel and waterfalls.
But when you are considering options, you need to consider the cost of getting there and back from other places you want to see.
Personally I would not choose Brienz as an extended stay option. It's nice for a day of sightseeing to include both Brienz and Geissbach, but choose a better base. Have you considered the Lauterbrunnen Valley? It's a magnificently beautiful area and only 20 minutes by train to Interlaken where you can catch the boat around lakes Brienz and Thun.
Also look at Meiringen--Reichenbach Falls, Planplatten, the Aareschlucht... Easily accessible to Brienz by train and all of the places I mentioned are great for hiking in the area. The Aareschlucht in particular.
I checked rates in the midst of the high season and you can stay in Meiringen for between $60 and $90 per person per night. The Hotel Viktoria in Hasliberg-Reuti (on the mountainside above Meiringen) has the most availability and is also the most expensive. The least expensive and with the least availability (mind you for the dates I entered which were June 8-12) is the Hotel Tourist which is very easy walking distance to the Aareschlucht. When we were in Meiringen we stopped at the Hotel Tourist for a snack/drink before hiking the gorge as I recall. Cute little place and very hospitable folks. Thanks to all who responded. We are staying at HOtel Brienzerburli for two nights following a day in Luzerne. From there we go up to Murren and Wengen . The hotel that I found in Brienz has accomodations for three of us . The Linderhof is also excellent ( I stayed there three years ago) but I wanted to spend less this time.
