We will be staying in Mittenwald from 7 - 12 October. We have been thinking of driving down into Italy one day. Is October a good time of the year to do this in regards to traffic and possibly weather?
Thanks,
There may be some snowfall on the higher peaks, but this is unlikely to affect the roads at lower elevations.
Hi Kathryn,
We've driven the Brenner pass a few times in mid to late October. No problem. After 5 recent trips to the Austrian, Bavarian and Italian Alps in October/November, never a snow day or even close to one. That is just our experiences... weather is unpredictable. The Brenner is the lowest pass in elevation and really a multi-lane major highway. We loved Sterzing/Vipiteno and Brixen/Bressanone. Both are not far into Italy. I'd say the drive from Mittenwald (we also love Mittenwald!) to the border is about an hour or so.
