Breitachklamm near Fussen

I will be in Fussen in May and was looking at things to see around the area and found Breitachklamm. It looks like it's about an hours drive from Fussen. Does anyone know if this is worth spending some time to go to and whether the walk is easy or difficult through the gorge?

A Klamm is a deep, narrow gorge cut by glacial runoff. It must be a common occurrence in the foothills of the Alps. There are a couple, Wimbachklamm and Almbachklamm near Berchtesgaden, and Partnachklamm outside of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We went to Wimbachklamm in 2002. I think you would want to go on a hot day, because it is very misty and humid inside the Klamm (maybe related to our word, clammy?). It would be refreshing on a hot day, bonechilling on a cold day. There was a wooden walkway along the side of the Wimbachklamm and it looks like there is something like it at Breitbachklamm. Ours was pretty flat and whenever you had to go up there were steps. It looks like Breitbachklamm is near Oberstdorf, at the entrance to the Kleinwalsertal. Oberstdorf, one of German's biggest ski resorts, is in a part of Germany called the Oberallgäu, and Kleinwalsertal is just over the border in Austria, although it is isolated from the Voralberg by a range of mountains. There are a lot of hiking trails, some of them very steep, in Kleinwalsertal. I would encourage you to visit Oberstdorf and to go up into the Kleinwalsertal while there. The whole area is beautiful. I spent a week in the Oberallgäu in 2000 and loved it so much I've been back 3 more time for a week each time.

Thank you so much for the information. It's been very helpful. The other locations you mentioned also look wonderful. We will have more time in Salsburg than Fussen so I will have to fit in one of the ones near Berchtesgaden. We hadn't planned on having a car in the Salsburg area and am wondering if this would be easily accessible or maybe I'll need to look at renting a car for a day?

No need to rent a car. It's easy to get there by bus from Salzburg. Regionalverkehr Oberbayern (RVO, www.rvo-bus.de, in German) runs buses in Berchtesgaden and one to/from Salzburg. The Watzmann Express, RVO bus 840, goes from in front of the Salzburg Hbf to Berchtesgaden Hbf. Here is the schedule. It makes other stops coming out of Salzburg, like at Mirabelle Platz, the Rathaus, and the Justizgebäude (Justice building). Almbachklamm is a stop on bus 840, about ½ hour out of Salzburg, 3 stops after Marktschellenberg. Tell the driver where you are going. The fare to Almbachklamm should be less than to Berchtesgaden. Wimbachklamm is on the other side of Berchtesgaden Hbf. Take bus 840 to Bechtesgaden Hbf and then bus 847 toward Ramsau. The stop for the Klamm, Wimbachbrücke, is about 10 min outside of Berchtesgaden. An RVO Tagesticket, for €9,50 per adult, will give you unlimited use of the RVO buses, RT Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and Berchtesgaden to Wimbachbrücke, for the day.
