I don't want the expensive hotel breakfast. Any places on the west side near where KuDamm and Kurfurstenstrasse come together (just south of Tiergarten) to have a simple breakfast?
It sounds like you already booked your room, but many places have breakfast included in the room price. Those are the ones I usually go for. At any rate there are plenty of bakeries and cafes scattered around, but may or may not be close to where you are staying. Ask your hotel where the best options are or do a little scouting when you arrive. There are many blogs online for eating & breakfasts like these examples: http://love-breakfast.com/breakfast-at/10-of-the-best-breakfast-and-brunch-spots-in-berlin/ AND http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2011/aug/17/10-best-cafe-bakeries-berlin AND http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2011/aug/17/10-best-breakfast-brunch-berlin. I hope this helps you out a bit.
Have you checked if breakfast is included with your room rate? I'd be surprised if it weren't, because most German hotels include a very nice and extensive buffet breakfast with their room rate.
If you want cheap and simple: Café Herdenberg (Hardenbergstraße 10) www.cafe-hardenberg.de they cater to university students with small budgets. Generally, the area around Savignyplatz is full of cafes and restaurants, some off the top of my head that offer breakfast : Café Bleibtreu (Bleibtreustraße 45) www.cafe-bleibtreu.de Café Savigny (Grolmanstraße 53) Zwölf Apostel (Italian restaurant) (Bleibtreustraße 49) www.12-apostel.de and many more. Classics include: Café Kranzler (Kurfürstendamm 18) www.cafekranzler.de
Café Einstein (Kurfürstenstraße 58) www.cafeeinstein.com
Linda, Another good and cheap place for breakfast or just for coffee in Charlottenburg is Schwarzes Cafe, Kantstraße 148. Like those suggested above, it's specifically in Savignyplatz. You can reach it by the S-Bahn from Tiergarten to Savignyplatz.
Thank you all! Savignyplatz appears to be within walking distance.
Yes, everything I listed (including Savignyplatz) is in walking distance from Breitscheidplatz. The Schwarzes Café (www.schwarzescafe-berlin.de) is nice, and they are open and offering breakfast 24/7, but they are catering to high school students during the day and club/party goers during the evening and night.
So they're geared towards young guests, this may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on Linda's preferences.
We just spent 5 days in Berlin in August and breakfast was included in Pension Peters. I always try to book into a B&B or such that includes breakfast as their total price is most often less than a hotel that does not serve breakfast.
