My grandfather was wounded in WW1 at Bourlon Woods. I would like to visit the memorial as a day trip from Paris on an upcoming trip. I am having trouble figuring out how best to do this. I am wondering if anyone out there has any information or suggestions. Thanks.
Canadian war memorials are managed by the federal government's Department of Veterans Affairs, including fairly extensive Internet resources. For Bourlon Woods, look here http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/memorials/directions/bourlonwood
The pleasant town of Arras is a good base for the battlefields, especially Vimy. It is an easy train ride from Paris. Once there, however, your public transport possibilities are limited, even for Vimy and certainly to the smaller places.
A couple of years ago we did a day trip of various Somme Battlefields with a great company called Western Front Tours www.westernfronttours.com.au
It might be worthwhile contacting them as they commence the tour from Arras, which is about 20 miles from the site you are interested in. It might be possible to include Boulon Wood in the itinerary.
Thank you all for your replies. We have decided to rent a car to get to Bourlon Wood and then also visit a few other memorials in the area.
Albert, and it's unique WW1 museum, is nearby and convenient if you have a car. The tourist information center in Albert can provide you with a map of a driving tour of nearby WW1 sights. Don't miss the Thiepval Anglo-French Cemetery. You will want to see the preserved trenches at Beaunont-Hamel along with the monument honoring the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.
