bookong hotels in germany over octorber fest

We will be traveling in Germany Sept 13- Sept 28. We have booked our rooms for Munich due to Octoberfest but i'm wondering if i have to book rooms for the rest of the places we'll be in. We don't have it all mapped out yet but we're looking at Fussen, Rothenburg and Berlin. I'm wondering if it'll be ok to 'wing it' and find hotels once we get there. Is Octorfest just crazy busy in Munich or does that apply to all of Germany?

For the last 10 years, I have always booked my rooms in advance. Not that you won't find something if you "wing it", it's just that there are others out there booking in advance, and they are going to get the best places before you even start.

I think Lee is right about booking ahead. You can always find a place on the fly, but it many be more expensive or inferior to what you can get booking in advance. As for Munich and Oktoberfest, I don't expect you will find larger than normal crowds outside of the fairgrounds and the train station. At least that was my experience a few years ago.

Oktoberfest only affects Munich and the surroundings. The rest of Germany has their own harvest festivals, would usually only draw regional crowds.
