I'll be in Spain the first couple weeks of September and traveling on the night from Barcelona from Madrid the first week. Is it necessary to book it before I leave? I've attempted to do so via Tik Net on the Renfe site but am having trouble setting up a New User Account. Any suggestions?

We are going from Barcelona to Madrid and I just booked an incredibly cheap ticket on the Vuerling airlines. The trip takes an hour and fifteen minutes and cost about 40 euro each--round trip. Check them out unless you just want to go by train. It would save some time and I think the train is much more expensive.
