booking a train ticket from Amsterdam to Bruges

I have been reading and researching online and need help- what is the best way to book a train ticket from Amsterdam to Bruges? Should I just book from Amsterdam to Brussels and THEN buy a ticket to Bruges? Can you only purchase tickets a couple of months in advance? This quest is making me feel like I have a shrinking IQ. Help!

There are two ways to make the journey: 1. Take the regular intercity train from Amsterdam to Antwerp, then change to another IC train to Bruges. This requires no advance reservations, tickets are simply purchased at the train station on the day of your journey. 2. Take the Thalys high-speed train to Antwerp (sometimes its faster to change in Brussels), and connect to an IC train to Bruges. This journey is slightly faster, to get the cheapest price you need to book well in advance (90 days allowed), and you are locked into a specific departure out of Amsterdam CS. Check schedules and book tickets via this site: http://www.nshispeed.nl/en

Book yourself a combination of Thalys + IC. It is faster and - more importantly - less prone to cancellations.

We did the same as Bruce. What was interesting the conductor check our tickets and said, "Too bad you only have 15 mins in Antwarp. The station is worth seeing." I said we could do that. So he issued us a new ticket with an 1 hour and 15 min wait. So we wonder through the station and it is worth a stop. Walk across the plaza to ice cream/choc shop which was very good and then caught our train to Bruges and that train was 10 min faster we only lost about an hour. Well worth it. Afterall we are on vacation like small changes that are interesting. We bought our tickets the day before in Amsterdam
