Do I need a regional ticket or point to point. We land in Munich for 2 days and plan on taking train to Salzburg for 3 days and then to Mestre, Italy 2 days. (close to Venice for cruise.)Our ship sales from Venice to Rome. Also on one of Rick Steve's recent shows, it showed some type of camp either prisoner of war or one of the death camps used during WW II in Austria. Wondering how far it was from Salzburg and can it be reached by train can't remember what city it was only know close to Germany.
Lastly is Innsbruck worth visiting like a side trip out of Salzburg I think trains run from Salzburg to Innsbruck.
You can go from Munich (even from the airport) to Salzburg with a Bayern-Ticket, €21 for single, €29 for up to 5p. "I think trains run from Salzburg to Innsbruck." There are trains. The fastest way from Salzburg to Innsbruck goes through Germany without stopping, stops in Kufstein, then up the Inn River to Innsbruck. Instead of a day trip to Salzburg, go there, spend the night, then take the train over Brenner Pass to Venice.
Thank you for the info, and are the trains easy to navagate getting on and off , since this is our first trip to Europe. Is Innsbruck worth visiting or is there somwhere else more interesting.
If you are joining a cruise, will you have packed light? The less luggage you have the easier it is to get on and off trains. We could have skipped Innsbruck, if in the area we stay up the cliff in Seefeld.
Yes after watching Rick we plan on packing lite.If you would have skipped Innsbruck , what would you have preferred on seeing. Once in Salzburg we are flexable.
The most notorious concentration camp in Austria was Mauthausen near Linz. You could probably do it as a day trip from Salzburg.
Thank you, thats what I was looking for. Do you know if you can take the train from Salzburg to that locaton?
There is a train station at Mauthausen (town). You can get there by regional train from Linz, any train from Salzburg to Linz. The memorial is not right at the station.According to the Mauthausen website (click on visitor information) you can walk (~5 km) or there are taxis.
Thank you and thanks for the web site.
Terry: If you're wanting to tour a work camp, I would suggest you visit Dachau a few miles NW of Munich. I've been there twice, and it's been done in good taste. As far as rail travel, you can view a few different transportation options on RailEurope.com. Mestre is not listeduse Venice. You can go by train to Villach, Austria, and transfer over to a bus or train that goes into Venice. Or, you could go down to Innsbruck, thru the Brenner Pass and down to Venice by train. Or, you could stop in Innsbruck, spend the night and go on down to Venice on point to point tickets. Yes, Innsbruck is worth visiting, as the mountain scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Anyway it goes, transport to the Venice area is a full day trip.
Terry, Given the overall route you'll be travelling, I agree with the previous suggestion to visit Dachau instead of Mathausen. As you'll be in Munich for a few days, it would be easy to take ~half a day to tour the Camp. You can take the trip to Dachau either on your own, or take an organized day trip with Radius Tours. Dachau was the first of the camps (opened ~1933) and was used as the "model" for others. The camp is a short distance from the town (and rail station) but as I recall there's a Bus to the camp. While in Salzburg, you could also consider a trip to Berchtesgaden for a tour of the Dokumentation Centre, Bunkers and possibly the Eagle's Nest. There's also a Salt Mine there that can be toured. Again, you can take the trip on your own or take a day trip with Bob's Special Tours. Happy travels!
Point-to-point tickets will be your best deal here. I would see Dachau from Munich. I would also be sure to sleep in Salzburg. I would rather have more time in Salzburg than see Innsbruck at all.
Don't forget to allow time to enjoy Venice before your cruise starts. Buy the right Rick Steves guidebooks, even if you only bring a few chapters from them. One mistake avoided will pay for each book you bring. Good luck.
Thanks everyone for the great ideas , we are so looking forward to this trip. One last question are the trains easy to figure out meaning being able to get on the right train . Do the train stations , have good signage where you can see where to go. And according to the hotel we are staying in Mestre its one stop out of Venice.
