Bonn or Cologne?

I am helping my children plan a trip to Germany. After leaving Bacharach, they will stay overnight in either Bonn or Cologne and explore both cities before taking the train to meet us in Amsterdam. Which city (Bonn or Cologne), with a hostel near the train station, would be the better place to spend the night and why?

I do not know how old your children are, but I think they would have a much better time in Cologne. Bonn is a kind of sleepy little town, and Cologne has a wonderful night life going on. It also has a lot more to see. It is the 4th largest city in Germany and therefore has all the great things that go along with that. A great Alt Stadt along the river, the Kölner Dom of course, many museums and a wonderful shopping zone.

I agree with Jo, I really like Bonn but for someone who wants nightlife, they're more likely to find it in Koln.

Thanks for your replies, Jo and Brad. The kids will be 17,20, and 21, plus a 21 yo Spanish former exchange student. It will be on December 20, so I'm sure there will be wonderful Christmas markets in Cologne. The 21 year olds are interested in nightlife, whereas the younger two have no interest. Cologne sounds like the better place to spend the night, although they can enjoy a stop in Bonn on the way. I appreciate your input.
