Last year we spent a few nights at Gasthaus Die Krone in Staufen, a very cute little town. We spent one day exploring around there, and a second driving to Colmar. Another day we took the train to Freiburg. I think I'm remembering correctly that our hosts provided us with free tickets for the regional train system. I highly recommend Die Krone, attractive rooms, good breakfast, and very welcoming personnel. I think the price was 85 euros/night. They also have a restaurant, where we enjoyed a nice dinner one night.

Staufen is pleasant but relatively unremarkable as Black Forest towns go. Get into the high Black Forest and things get more scenic and more interesting. Schiltach is a favorite of mine - lots and lots of half-timbered buildings, very scenic. Calw and Gengenbach are also fairly stunning. Gutach has an interesting farm life museum called the Vogtsbauernhof:

Titisee-Neustadt-Hinterzarten are also scenic and nice if you enjoy walking.

This is a great non-commercial site for perusing accommodations:

Schiltach is quiet, pretty, peaceful and most of all authentic. No tourist shops, just local bakeries, shops and the real feeling of the Black Forest. A gorgeous river and tons of walking trails where you can hike then have a drink with the locals. A very friendly German town.
