I'm planning to take the RS Eastern Europe tour that ends at Lake Bled, Slovenia. Lacking good airline connections to get back home the day the tour ends, I am considering taking the train from Lesce Bled to Salzburg in the morning, staying overnight Salzburg, leaving late morning by train to Munich, staying overnight (near train station?) and then to the airport early the next morning to fly home. This looks feasible train-wise looking at bahn.com. Anyone have advice where they'd spend more time (Salzburg/Munich)? Any must-see-must-do activities? I know it's quick, and have no illusions about seeing everything, but I'll also be at the end of almost three weeks on the road. Would you bother trying to see any of Munich, or just get there and find an airport hotel? Your thoughts appreciated - I'm in the early stages of planning. thanks!!
Bled to Salzburg looks like about 4 hours. That should give you some time in the afternoon to see Salzburg. Then some more time in the morning. Sounds about right. Even by regional train (so you can use a Bayern-Ticket), Salzburg to Munich is only two hours, so you should have the afternoon and evening it Munich. Unless your flight out is VERY, VERY early, you should have time (40 min) to get there in the morning from town. I would try to stay near Marienplatz at one of the hotels mentioned here (Viktualien Markt, Blauer Bock, or Münchner Kindl). Coming into Munich, you don't have to go all the way to the Hbf. You can get off at the Ostbahnhof and take the S-Bahn to Marienplatz (all on the Bayern-Ticket). In the morning, you just take the first S-Bahn to the airport from Marienplatz.
