Someone recently mentioned to me that there is a a lot of black tar on the beaches in Normandy from the English Channel and that if we plan to tour the D-Day beaches (which we do) to bring an old pair of shoes to throw away after we leave, so our nice, clean ones do not get ruined. I have not heard/read about that anywhere else. Is there any truth to this?

We've been there 7 times in the last 10 yrs and have never, ever seen one speck of tar anywhere at Omaha Beach or Utah Beach.

Ditto. Not an issue. I was at all 5 beaches two weeks ago and they're all beautiful, sandy beaches.
