I am going on a 7 day trip to Switzerland this November and, though it is in Germany, my dad would like to visit the Black Forest. We would use Basel as a jumping off point, but my question is what would be the best place to visit and activities for a day trip to the Black Forest and is it even worth it?
The Black Forest to me is OK. 1 daytrip would be difficult & not worth the xtra effort to get there. You would also need a car.It is a slow long drive thru it. Yes it is a forest and pretty. The name I believe Black Forest is what makes it enticing much like the romantic road. There is a nice historical german clock museum to visit in Furtwangen. I would spend the xtra time in Switz anytime over Blk Forest.
I enjoyed my most recent trip to the BF very much. It's a great place to see rural life at a slower pace and some terrific half-timbered towns. Schiltach and Calw were standouts in this regard. It's also a great place for hiking or biking if that interests you - great scenery.
You might have a read on Bavaria Ben's most recent trip - his trip report has great photos of the things he saw and the places he stayed, peppered with little tips for travel:
Chris, November is probably not the best time for a day trip to the Black Forest. The weather is iffy (does anyone still use this word?), the days are short, and if it's cold and rainy, a city is more fun with warm and cozy cafes and nice restaurants with good food and perhaps a music performance in the evening. November in Germany has always been kind of dreary (and I've spent lots of Novembers there....) Anna
I agree with Russ, love Schiltach and Claw. Even if you only do a day trip to Triberg and see Germany's tallest waterfall. Is it worth it...your DAD wants to go...take him !!
