Okay my trip is fast approaching! Not much time for new reservations or cancelling standbys. We will be driving the entire way. The portion of the trip I am concerned with is from Black Forest area (our Bauernhof is in Gutach) to Reutte, Austria. No direct roads. Some route finders tell me to go back up to Stuggart area and then head down toward Fuessen. I have been told to just go East and enjoy Bodensee area as well. The problem is time constraint as I already have a room waiting in Reutte. I don't want to be driving anywhere at night! Is this doable BF to Fuessen area in a day if we start out at around 10am? Would it be best to spend a night along the way or just stop for lunch somewhere. Does anyone have specific road numbers for this route? Perhaps from as far down as Freiberg to Fuessen. That looks straight....need help soon. Thank you all! I leave on the 31st of this month. Can't wait!!!!!! Happy trails to everyone!!!!
"Some route finders tell me to go back up to Stuggart area and then head down toward Fuessen." Unless you want to learn the meaning of the word "stau", I would avoid driving by Stuttgart at all costs. "I don't want to be driving anywhere at night! Is this doable BF to Fuessen area in a day if we start out at around 10am?" At the time you will be visiting, it won't get completely dark until after 9:30 PM. Your drive will take, at most, 6 hours, and that's probably a huge over estimate. "Does anyone have specific road numbers for this route?" Don't try to navigate by road numbers unless you're driving on the autobahn. It will confuse you more than it will help. If you just navigate by the names of towns in your direction of travel and stay on the priority roads, it's really hard to get lost. Example: From Gutach, follow the signs to Villingen. Once you get to Villingen, follow the signs that point you to the autobahn route A81. Take A81 in the direction towards Freidrichshafen, Konstanz and Lindau. When these directions fork, follow the road to Freidrichshafen and Lindau. Continue to Lindau. At Lindau, follow the signs to Kempten, Füssen and Reutte. Near Kempten, continue towards Reutte and Füssen. It couldn't be easier.
Thanks Tom. I looked at the Reutte booking and check in is as late as 8pm. I will contact them directly and give them a heads up. So are you saying it will take 6 hours, or are you pulling my leg???? I am really in the dark here, so bear with me. Thank you for the AUTObahn number and town names, that will help. So you are sending me east thru lake area? I don't know why the route things send me to Stuttgart. I appreicate your tip on avoiding it. Don't think I want to ask the meaning of the word!!! I went to pt eval today and am trying to snap myself into shape for this long trip.
ViaMichellin estimates 3 and a half hours driving time and about 170 miles from Gutach to Reutte. Gutach to Fuessen is about the same. Counting routine stops, it will probably take closer to four hours to reach your destination. But you may be tempted to visit some scenic sites, churches or towns along the way, in which case, it could easily take six hours. If you are enjoying yourself instead of barreling through, that is not so bad, either. (You might want to look up on the web some of the towns Tom mentions. One or two of those might be worth a stop for its own sake, and one of the towns closer to Fuessen, such as Kempten, might be a good place to spend the night.) If you have or can locate a GPS with European maps, it will make the driving a lot easier.
I drove from Sankt Peter to Fuessen via Bodensee. We stopped for lunch along the lake and still made it to Fuessen to check in to our hotel and have dinner. We probably left Sankt Petrt around 9 or 10 in the morning.
6 hours, as I wrote, is a huge overestimate, and I quoted this number as the absolute longest amount of time it would possibly take. This includes stopping for lunch, stopping by something along the way that you may find interesting, and correcting any wrong turns that you may make. The number Roy quoted is probably closer to what you will actually experience.
