My parents, myself, sister and 2 young kids (age 7 and 5) are planning our trip to explore Black Forest from 26 May 2012 for 8 days. We will be staying in Lake Titisee and using this town as a base to go around. I plan to use the Konus Card to travel around Black Forest. I thought of doing 1 day in Basel & 1 day in Strausborg (France) Appreciate some suggestions on where we should go for the rest of the trip. We love to do some easy hiking, go to interesting museums, unique small towns or even take a cable car to a mountain for a picnic. Thanks so much for your help! Warmest Regards.

Hiking: Hochfirst peak is a nice hike. It's about a 350 m. change in elevation from Neustadt's station. There's an inn and a lookout tower atop the mountain. http://www.wanderhoernchen.de/images/Hochfirst.jpg Strasbourg: the Konus Card gets you to Kehl via Offenburg, where you change trains. From Kehl, the German border town, you'll need a ticket to Strasbourg and back. Hausach is an attractive village. From there, visit Schiltach (half-timbered house heaven) and the high elevation towns of Hornberg, Triberg (Black Forest Museum, mostly in German) and Villingen (really nice old town) Near Hausach: http://en.vogtsbauernhof.org/ (easy 30-min. walk or bus from Hausach)
I visited the Black Forest last Fall. Since you are going to use the Konus Card (which we did and which is a good idea), you will probably need to go by train to many destinations. In that case, you would have to transfer at Freiburg for Basel and Strasbourg, and they would be rather long trips from Lake Titisee. If you want to base yourself there, I would recommend just seeing the Black Forest and Freiburg, and forgetting Basel and Strasbourg. On the other hand, you could stay at one of the little villages near Freiburg that is on the train route. In that case, travel to Basel and Strasbourg would be easier. In any case, you might want to visit Triberg to see the waterfalls there (although it is pretty touristy). We really liked Gengenbach, a beautiful little walled village.
