We are in Bischofshofen for several days and want to do the train ride to ferry- across the lake to Hallstatt for a day trip. Where should we go to catch the train? We had been told to catch it in Attnang-Puchheim but after getting over here, find that to be a circular 1 1/2 hour drive. Isn't there a closer train station where we could board? We have car.
Hi Gary. I'm confused by your question. If you have a car, why not just drive to Hallstatt?
Thanks for your reply. We figured it out last night! The Attnang suggestion was if leaving from Salzburg. We want to take train so we can take ferry across the lake--leaving in abt. 5 minutes!
If you were leaving in about 5 min, you already left. However. Unfortunately, there is not a straight line connection between Bischofshofen and Hallstatt. You're kind of like at opposite corners of a square. I'm not sure of the fastest route, but you can find it on www.oebb.at. Either you go up to Salzburg and from there to Hallstatt via Attnang-Puchheim, or go down to Zell, then east to Stainach-Irdning, then NW to Hallstatt. (I think that's right. I'm on the road without the maps I have at home, doing this from memory.) If you want to do part by car, you could catch the train at Salzburg, Attnang-Puchheim, Zell, or Stainach-Irdning. There is also a train station in Bischofshofen.
Thanks all,
We are having breakfast @ downtown Hallstatt. Beautiful!!,
