My husband and I are planning to bike a portion of the Mosel Valley in July. Do you think we need to reserve rooms in the small towns along the way? Sorry for the repeat question. We have reservations for the rest of our time in the cities.

My husband and I cycled the Mosel from Thionville to Koblenz last July. We went without reservations so we could ride as little or as much as we wanted each day. We did not have difficulty finding accommodation, however, if I were to do it again, I would research accommodations more before leaving home and go with a list of hotels/guesthouses and phone numbers. Sometimes we arrived in towns after their tourist offices closed, making it harder to find a place to stay.
You may want to look into the Bett and Bike organization - we used a similar service in the Netherlands and enjoyed meeting some interesting people.

Bikeline has a book listing bike friendly hotels, etc., by postal code (city). Its name is "Bett & Bike" and is available at Amazon.de. ISB N 3-85000-020-6.
