Bike Trailers Available in Germany?

Since some of our "regulars" live in Germany I thought I'd ask. Might we be able to find a bicycle trailer (the kind that small children ride in) to rent? Are they as common there as they are in the US? I know I have seen them in Denmark, but I haven't really been in Germany for a long time. Thinking about planning a trip with kids and grandkids that would include some cycling. Thanks!

I know they have them for sale in Austria, so for sure in Germany. We are going to St Goar along the Rhine next May and I have been emailing a bike rental company in Koblenz to see if they have trailers (for my Jack Russell, Thor)...no go for a rental. I finally settled on finding a nice collapsable one that i will bring packed and padded as a piece of flat luggage. The rental company has no problem with me hooking up the trailer to one of their bikes. Might help the experts if you said where you will be going in Germany, they may know of specific rental places in the areas you are planning.

Thanks, Alex. I don't have a specific place in mind yet---just starting to research possibilities for a 4 or 5-day trip on dedicated paths (not roads). It might be France (Alsace) or Austria (Inn Cycle path) as well. The Main River path looks pretty good and I will check it out when we are in Bamberg this fall. (I can also inquire at bike shops there about the availability of trailers). There may be liability issues with rentals, but we hope to avoid packing and carrying one over,

The Inn river I hear is very nice. We have done the Danube from Aschach an der Donau down to Krems in Austria. Very nice paths there. Trip next May will be a good start for me and Thor. He loves his trailer here in Colorado. Next trip we plan to do after St Goar is Munich to Bregenz. If you are doing Austria you might try emailing Pedalpower in Vienna. We rented bikes there for our Danube trip the owner Rick is an ex-pat Anmerican and may be able to help you on somewhere to rent trailers.

Jut enter the name of the German location and "Fahrradverleih" (bicycle rental) into your favorite internet search engine. E.g. I did that for Bamberg, and the second hit had both an English web site version and offered trailers: "... Child trailer with full suspension ..." http://www.bambergundrad.de/english/pages/verleih.html

Prima! A child trailer with full suspension that carries 2 children is exactly what they need. I will stop in and talk to them when I am in Bamberg in September. The bike trip will be in late May, 2014 so I have some time to scout around. My son and his wife both lived in Berlin as students, so they will want to go there as well. We are trying to get this trip in before the twins turn 2 (in June) and have to pay for airline tickets.

I did, that is encouraging. I will keep checking around the areas I will be in. Rainy over there in Husky country? I am U of O grad from south of you in Eugene...Duck country. Now I see the sun about 99% more over here in Colorado.

Yes, of course you can. There are several providers and platforms, like this. As a rule of thumb they seem to be ca. €10 per day.

Thanks, andreas. Interesting website---kind of like eBay for rentals. And there is even a trailer for dogs! See that, Alex?

It snowed on us this morning, but it didn't stick around, at least not downtown. WE made it through the winter with no snow days, but then it snows the first day of Spring!

Well we have snow coming down right now. Darn and I was biking to work last week. If I find out about any more trailer rentals I'll let you know.
