We're looking for information on renting bikes while in Bernese Oberland. Can anyone offer info on rental locations and/or experiences? Thanks in advance.
There is a complete listing in Rick's Switzerland guidebook. All the shops are very near the train/cable car stations.
In Mürren, there is a sports shop on the upper road, near the sports center, that has mountain bikes for rent.
Thanks, again. Does anyone have a favorite ride/route that they'd suggest?
We haven't actually done it, as I'm not keen on biking downhill. But I know the area from hiking there.
The route described by Rick in his "Best of the Alps" show (you can find the script on the website) goes from Mürren down to Gimmelwald by the paved path, then on down to Stechelberg on signed trails (little bike logo on the yellow directonal sign). From Stechelberg, ride the path along the river back to Lauterbrunnen, and ride the cablecar up to Grutschalp. Bike bake to Müren along the road rather than riding the train back.
You can also do a reverse loop, starting with the ride out to Grutschalp, then follow paths down to Isenfluh and on down to Lauterbrunnen. Then you would ride up the valley to Stechelberg and ride the Schilthorn cablecar back to Mürren.
You can get a bike map at the TI in Mürren. I'd ask the bike shop guy to suggest which route they prefer and mark it on the map. Some of the paths signed for bikes are technical mountain bike trails, and unless you are a competent mountain biker you'll want to avoid those. Otherwise you could end up running into these guys, biking the hikers' trail down from Mürren:
In Rick's book and on the video episode, he describes riding down to the valley and using the funicular to carry the bikes back up to Grutschalp. It appears that this funicular has been replaced by a gondola. Will it still be possible to transport bikes up to Grutschalp?
No problem...the cable car will accept bikes.
