Here's another question. We want to stay in a beautiful town in a surrounding area of Munich the dates of Dec. 23-27. Any suggestions. We would like something not so touristy yet want to ski, shop, wonder, etc.

Hmmmm, how long does that take from Munich and do we need to show passports going from Germany to Austria?

Where ever you pick to ski, check on the opening. Many of the areas in the German Alps don't start sking until Christmas day.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is, of course, the premier ski area in Germany, but there are ski towns with smaller slopes all over that area. If it were I, and with the best snow in the world here in Colorado, I don't go to Germany to ski, I would go to Oberstdorf. Oberstdorf, Germany's second largest ski area, is a little farther away (2½ hrs by regional train). There are a lot of people there in the winter, but probably not a lot of Americans.
