Between Salzburg and Vienna...what to do?

It's not far from Salzburg, so doesn't get you that close to Vienna, but the Salzkammergut region has some amazing hiking. We stayed just outside of St. Wolfgang, and their tourist office had some great maps of hiking in the area. The Salzkammergut has all of that gorgeous Sound of Music scenery -- mountains and lakes. It's a little slice of heaven.

Totally agree - great hiking possiblities, good rail and bus connections, plentiful accommodations, - The Salzkammergut has it all.
