Between Murren and Venice?

We need a 2 night stop from Murren to Venice. We've stayed in Como before and it's nice. Looking for a new place to stop. We're going by train and have two nights in Lugano booked. After further reading.... is there somewhere better? More Swiss ? "not Swiss not Italian, but Lugano" according to Fodor's. (can't tell if that's good or bad....) Looks pretty though!

Two thoughts. Bologna in Italy or Luzern in Switzerland. On some train routes from Muerren to Venice, the train does stop at Bologna. Lots of things to do within range of the train station. For a more crazy thought, take the Golden Pass train to Luzern (via Arth-Goldau) and stay there. Believe it or not, the train journey time from Luzern to Venice is about 45 minutes faster than from Muerren. From Luzern, the train goes from Arth-Goldau to Milan via the Gotthard tunnel (very fast). Just a crazy thought.

I like your crazy idea. You're saying after Murren, train to Luzern. Stay the two nights there (cancel our 2 nights in Lugano) and from Luzern, train into Venice via the Golden Pass? Any additional information? Me likey! "For a more crazy thought, take the Golden Pass train to Luzern (via Arth-Goldau) and stay there. Kellie. Not quite. From Muerren, you take the Schilthornbahn (Muerren to Lauterbrunnen) and the Jungfraubahn (Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost) out to the Interlaken Ost train station. From there, you take the Golden Pass train or other regular trains on the same tracks to Luzern. This is a 2.0hr train journey from the Interlaken Ost train station on most runs with no train changes on some runs. When you are ready to depart for Venice, it's a train journey just under 7.0hrs via Arth-Goldau, the Gotthard tunnel and Lugano before arriving at Milan where you would change trains for Venice. If you take the 8:18 train from Luzern, the total journey time is 6hrs22min with one train change at Milan.

Kellie, an alternative to Larry's suggestion which I proposed on your other thread was to stay on Rigi, since you mentioned hiking and cows Rigi is the mountain between Lake Lucerne and Arth-Goldau. You can meet the train to Milan at Arth-Gldau by taking a cogwheel train down Rigi. It is beautiful up on Rigi and the train is fun. but when are you going? There has been a landslide which has wiped out a section of track on the Gotthard route, so the trains do not run; they are shifting people to buses and it takes an extra 90 minutes or so. This would affect your ability to reach Lugano as well. The disruption is expected to last for a month. SBB is suggesting taking an alternate route. If you are traveling in th enext mnth, there are 2 alternates you could consider. One is to go from Mürren west to Spiez and to Milan that way, via Spiez. I can suggest a wonderful place to stop on this route if you are truly interested in hiking and cows: we like it even more than Mürren. The other option would be to head to Luzerna and on to Chur, and then take the Bernina Express to Tirano and reach Milan that way. This would add a lot of travel time. Personally I would take the Spiez-Brig route to reach Milan. Let me know if you would like my suggestion of where to stop on that route.

Hi Lola... I would love to know the place you have in mind as we will be in Murren 10/26 for 3 night then have 2 nights open with no itinerary. We are headed for Vareena for 3-4 nights then to Cinqua terra for 3. Any ideas on where to spend those 2 open nights on our way to Lake Como? We are traveling by train. What train do you recommend.
thanks for any ideas Jay
