between berlin and london

hello friends,
have an opening duing my current 49 day europe backpacking tour and would like some advice. leaving berlin on the 4th of august and need to be in london on the 10th of august. in terms of experience/budget what would you suggest doing for the 6 days. i think currently the plan is spend a few days of those in amsterdam, would it best to take a flight from amsterdam to london or do amsterdam right after berlin.
travelling with 2 other guys, have a keen interest to do something backdoorsy/out of the norm for those few days. ok with renting a car as well.

thanks for any advice you can lend!

You could visit Luxemburg, the city itself, but also the Duchy. There are many places that are worth visiting - the valley of the 7 castles (Eish valley), Useldange, Bourglinster. Then you could cross Belgim and visit Brugges, Gent, Antwerpen and Liege.

Does it have to be a stop along the beaten track? How about www.kassel.de? That's the area where the original sleeping beauty castle is (It's Saba Burg and not the one all the Rick Steves customers go to in Bavaria) - among many other sights. And the area is quite affordable, too. If you want visit the Teutoburger Wald mountains NW of Kassel. That's where in 1009 (yes, 1000 years ago) the Germanic tribes first beat the Roman army (Varus battle). Visit the Externsteine, an impressive natural monument and the Hermanns statue in that area... Stay over in either Bielefeld or Paderborn that night. I'd recommend Paderborn as it's a great students town (although probably not that many parties during summer break)...

Andreas, I believe you meant AD 9, or 2000 years ago. But I agree that the area around Kassel is very interesting, as is Marburg, then maybe a quick jaunt to Trier...all in a relatively straight line from Berlin to London, all very significant in an historical sense, very colorful, and all off the beaten path.
