We are traveling from the US to walk the Camino de Santiago, What is the best route to travel? Should we fly to London, Paris , Madrid or Spain. Also we plan to end our trip in Paris. Thank you in advance.
Sharon
It's St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Paris. Getting to St Jean from Madrid is nearly impossible since there's no bus across the mountains from Pamplona as far as I know. From Paris (Montparnasse), take the TGV to Bayonne and a slow train to St Jean. I don't have the darndest idea how to get out of Santiago except by car. A wild guess would be a long train ride to Madrid and then train or fly. Or maybe just stick with trains all the way to Paris, but I'd bet that's more than a twenty-hour project.
Barry on this site recommended the book A Pilgrims Guide to the Camino de Santiago. I bought a copy as we were considering walking the camino. It answers many questions including transportation options for getting to St. Jean. It's a valuable resource!
Oops on the St. Jean de Port goof, St. Jean Pied de Port. Thank you ever so much for your input, greatly appreciated.
Buen Camino.
There is a forum specifically dedicated to walking the camino. You might want to ask your question there... http://www.caminodesantiago.me/board/el-camino-frances/ Buen camino!
" I don't have the darndest idea how to get out of Santiago except by car." Santiago has an airport. The airport code is SCQ. Iberia or Vueling will fly you from there to Paris-Orly.
Thanks, Tom, and dang your soul. Would you believe I've had an airplane driving license exactly two years less than I've had a car driving license and the obvious never even crossed my mind.
