We are planning to travel from Vicenza to Innsbruck sometime next year. What is the best mode of transportation? Also, would you suggest another border town other than Innsbruck? It is a family of adults - all 26 and older.
I did a quick search on the Rome2Rio website. It suggests train to Verona then train to Innsbruck.
You can train or drive. If you choose to drive, the views all the way up are spectacular. I've made the drive probably 20 or 30 times and it never gets old. Well, except the toll prices; the toll from Vicenza is about 20 euros and then you have to buy the verkhauf/vignette sticker for Austria which is 8 euros, then you have to pay the toll for the Europabrucke which is another 8 euros.
It sounds like you know this road well. I have never driven in Europe and don't have a lot of experience in snow and ice. I plan to drive this route at the end of February. Should I be worried about conditions on that route?
Is Innsbruck a border town? Not sure about that. No more than Bolzano. Are you going there just to say you crossed the border? Then you can stop at the Brenner pass and drive right back to Vipiteno or Bressanone. The Brenner freeway is always kept clear of snow, since it's the most important road artery connecting Italy to Northern Europe. However carrying chains or snow tires is mandatory at that time of the year. Hard to predict, but even in the worst of circumstances they try to clear the snow asap so that they can keep the pass open. If it's really bad, you might have a better time taking a train.
