Best way to get from Paris to Frankfurt?

My sister and I are planning a 3 week trip April/May 2012 in Europe. We will be spending 10 days in France. We then are planning to get to Frankfurt/ Heidelberg area to get a car and drive to Munich. What would be the best transportation from Paris? We then will go to Salzburg and onto Venice. We are flexible in our plans.
Thank you.

Check the rental car prices. There is often a hefty charge for dropping off a car in another country. If you rent the car in Germany, you could drive to Salzburg and back, then train/plane to Venice. You won't want a car in Venice :-)

We just want to get to an area by Frankfurt to stay the night at Heidelberg from Paris. Then we wanted to drive along the Romantische Strasse to Munich and stay the night. What if we then drove to Salzburg for 2 nights and drove back to Munich to return the car? Then is there a night train from Munich to Venice that would be good. That would probably be the day/night of May 7th. Any help in our itinerary also is great.
Thank you.

If you book NOW on the German Rail site, you may still be able to get a Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare as low as €39.00 on a direct ICE from Paris to Frankfurt. You can buy a Bayern-Ticket for Munich-Salzberg which allows 2-5 people to travel together on regional trains for one inclusive fare of €29.00. Travel after 09:00 weekdays and anytime on weekends. No need to buy a ticket in advance. You don't need to return to Munich to take a night train to Venice. Take a regional train from Salzburg to Rosenheim in time to catch the CNL night train that goes from Munich to Venice. Book the Rosenheim-Venice leg NOW and you may be able to get a Europa-Spezial Italien discount fare. Or if you don't mind a really late start (01:34), you can take the EN night train directly from Salzburg to Venice. Book tickets NOW on the Austrian Rail site to get the best fare.

Thank you so much for that valuable information. I'm going to research it right now. There are so many choices when traveling in Europe.
