We are traveling and spending time doing ancestral work in the Neuffen / Stuttgart area next week. We would like to make a trip to Colmar also. What or where is the best place to get there from. Is it advisable to spend a night there or just do a day trip.

When we go to Colmar, we stay several nights and still aren't ready to leave ;-) while others blow through it in a few hours... You can buy tickets for 52€ for a 2h to 2h30m trip with 1 train change. Go to Bahn.com for schedules.

According to the German Rail site given by Eileen, the fastest train route from Neuffen to Colmar requires three connections and takes just under three hours. If you depart from Stuttgart, the fastest route requires one connection and takes just under two hours.

I stayed in Colmar for 3 nights and could easily stayed longer. It's a nice place to relax for a few days.
