Best use of time for a morning in Iterlaken

I will be arriving in Interlaken at 6:00 in the morning and leaving at 1:00 that same afternoon to take the Golden Pass Train to Montreux. I have read about the area and am confused about whether it would be possible to take any of the mountain lifts in the area in that time frame. If yes, please explain the details of how to do that. If not, does anyone have any suggestions for how best to spend that time? It will be my daughter and myself - our first time to Europe so we would welcome and appreciate any help.

You have enough time to go to the top of the Schiltorn, have breakfast at the revolving restaurant at the peak and be back in Interlaken before the Golden Pass train:www.schiltorn.ch/en
From Interlaken Ost station it's a 90 minute journey to the peak via train, bus and cable car. The first train of the day out of the Interlaken Ost station is 6:35am.

You can check schedules at the Swiss Rail website www.sbb.ch/en
For the destination simply type "Schiltorn"

Interlaken has the official Swiss Rail Museum. It's mostly three floors of working model trains, but very fun.

Yes, you definitely have time...just don't stop in Interlaken, but keep on moving up to the Lauterbrunnen Valley and up to Muerren and up to the Schilthorn.

Interlaken is NOT in the Swiss Alps.

Hopefully, you stop at Interlaken Ost and not Interlaken West. From Interlaken Ost, go to track 2A and take the 20-minute train ride into Lauterbrunnen. From there, it's about an hour to the top of the Schilthorn via bus/gondola. Watch out, you are going via Gimmelwald and Muerren to get there. You will be tempted.

Don't attempt the Jungfrau. Not enough time. It's 2hrs up and 2hrs back.

i heartedly concur with the posters that a trip to Schilthorn would be the BEST morning trip you could take. There is one CRITICAL item you should find out before you buy any ticket or leave Interlaken ost station = Weather atop Schilthorn and prediction for that morning !!! Tickets are not inexpensive, and to be clouded/fogged in would be a tragedy. There are weather "recordings" but i would suggest calling the mountaintop Schilthorn restaurant directly or have someone who can translate english/german do so for you. Doing this round-trip in 6hrs is "ambitious". As an alternative, you might consider Harder Kulm which is very near the Interlaken ost station(make SURE you are at Interlaken ost[east] there are 2 stations,,, west and east). From the station front, you walk right, thru the parking lot, into a small park that parallels the river (ps if you have time, this is where the lake boat leaves from,,roundtrip a couple hours). At the end of the park is a main road, you turn right and walk across the river bridge. The funicular station is across the road on your left. Its a short ride at 45degrees up the mountainside. Then a 10 minute walk to the lookout terrace/restaurant. The view is 180 panorama of the alps beyond Interlaken to the south. Again weather is importent. There is both indoor and outdoor restaurant service. There are pleasent hiking trails. And, i think, a VERY small zoo. I do NOT believe all this would be open at 6 ,,, possibly google for their hours. So, prior to going, i would also suggest the 3 story Coop store directly across from the Interlaken ost station(also check for their hours, 6 sounds too early?? ). Go up escalator to 2nd floor, there is a self-serve cafeteria, other than beveridges, you pay by the weight of the plate. The tables face all-glass windows with relaxing view of the mountainside. GREAT place to wait for a train. On first floor is a grocery store, should you wish to go a-la-carte,,, or supplement what you eat.

You've gotten great advice but I thought I would add a little more detail since you are going to be in a hurry.

Once you get to Lauterbrunnen, you can either take the funicular up the mountain and then get on a train to Murren or get on a bus to Stechelburg and get on a gondola to Gimmelwald and then Murren.

I think the bus and gondola would be quicker. After getting off the train at Lauterbrunnen, go around the station and to your right. Cross the street. There is a bus or "post" stop just to the right of the funicular that goes to Stechelburg. Enjoy fabulous waterfalls on your way to Stechelburg. You will be let off right at the gondola station. It goes to Gimmelwald. At Gimmelwald, it's a few steps to get on another gondola to Murren (they are timed to get there at the same time). In Murren, you will get on another gondola to the Schilthorn.

If you don't have a Swiss Pass, you may be able to buy tickets for the whole way in Interlaken. Even if you do have a Swiss Pass, you are going to have to pay extra for the Schilthorn. The combo lift pass/James Bond breakfast is a discount and it's a really good breakfast buffet. The restaurant rotates with fabulous views and then you'll want to go outside to see the views even better.

I agree with trying to find out the weather forecast before going all the way up. It will be totally worthless if it is socked in.

In this case, from Lauterbrunnen, you can either go to Murren or Wengen--on either sides of the valley. You will follow the above directions to Murren. If you go to Wengen, you will get on a different train that goes up the mountain to Wengen. These two towns are up IN the mountains and are fun little towns to walk around in.

Forgive me if I misspelled any town names.

Thanks so much to all who replied to my question about my morning in Interlaken. The details you have given are invaluable, especially about the weather. I feel reassured that we can at least do something other than just stay in Interlaken. My daughter so wanted to take a lift to higher heights. Now I have the confidence to go for it!
